| Selling Your Lladros - Part II - Local Venues |
Now that you understand your motivation for selling, let us consider the avenues available to you for selling. These include local venues, to and through dealers, and by auction such as eBay. Local venues include garage (yard) sales, want ads, and flea markets or swap meets. Garage sales probably have the lowest cost to conduct the sale, but they are not zero. You need to advertise (e.g., wants ads and street signs), both of which also take your time (which has value). But with a garage sale, your Lladros are probably not the only items you have for sale. But remember, people attending garage sales are looking to pick up thing cheaply. You need to attract "qualified" buyers to the sale - people that want a Lladro, appreciate their value, and are willing to pay a fair price. Want ads have many similarities to garage sales, but require different effort on your part. First, want ads will also cost you money up front to place the ad. Usually, people want to minimize the cost by making the ad as short as possible. This, however, may be counterproductive. In selling your Lladro by want ads, you are relying on the copy of your ad to grab people's interest and call you about it. They need to know exactly what you are selling and the price. Just like garage sales, you need to attract "qualified" buyers through the ad - people that want a Lladro, appreciate their value, and are willing to pay a fair price. Doing this may run the cost of the ad up and, therefore, an unattractive venue. Finally, swap meets or flea markets have an advantage in the prospective buyers can see your Lladro, a visual art product. Again, however, what is the cost of entry to having a booth or table at the event? In Santa Fe, New Mexico, there is a flea market that has a world wide reputation. Many vendors show high end merchandise, the prices are not necessarily bargains, and the tourists spend freely. However, the cost of a booth is high, you need to transport your Lladros to the event (risking breakage), and you need to be present during the event. It costs you time and money. Now let's get to Part III and dealers. |
